Translation/ problem
Message from jiashaoru posted on 17-07-2015 at 16:53:56 (D | E | F)
Hello there,
I'm an English learner from China, and I'm learning translation currently. I have a problem.
In this sentence, "As the tree had fallen, it had torn up in its roots a circular cliff of mud", what does this phrase "a circular cliff of mud" mean? I don't understand it at all. Where does this "mud" come from?
Thanks to anyone who would like to help me
Jessie

Hello
A tree may be uprooted during a storm, and its roots may be wrapped in a huge amount of mud. Here 'a circular cliff of mud' is a sort of poetic and exaggerated image.
