Radical,/word meaning
Message from freda23 posted on 14-04-2015 at 09:14:43 (D | E | F)
Hello,
Could you help me please? Thanks for any reply.

The following is the passage today:
Thinking for yourself is still a radical act.
Thinking for yourself is not a popular activity, though it should be. Every step of real progress in our society has come from it. But in most circles, particularly in places that shape our lives - families, schools and most workplaces - thinking for yourself is regarded with suspicion. Some institutions thwart it on purpose. It can be seen as dangerous.
My question is:
"a radical act"
Does this phrase mean an act that is unpopular?
In the reference part of this passage, it explains that radical opinions or acts are based on the belief that important political or social changes are necessary.
I am quite confused.
