Message de liessedg posté le 01-05-2014 à 15:17:03 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,
je suis élève en terminale S et j'aurais besoin d'aide pour que quelqu'un me dise s'il y a des fautes pour que je puisse avoir une bonne note pour mon Bac sachant que je le passe très bientôt.
Merci d'avance.

MYTHS AND HEROES
Myths are stories that mean to explain the history of mankind, or the history and ideals of a society. In class, we focused first on Mandela who has come to be considered as a hero and even as a mythical figure. And then, we studied the myth of the western. In both cases, we asked ourselves the question: How far does the representation of heroes and myths reflect the evolution of a society? What does being a hero mean? What extent does to evolution of a myth and the representation of heroes correspond to the ideals of a society?

For a start, I will deal first with Mandela. Why is he considered as a hero?
Hero is a word with many different meaning. A hero would be someone who sacrifices their reputation or their life in a selfless way to help others. But a hero is also somebody who inspires many people, who can give people like hope and dream maybe. Barack Obama gave a speech in honor of Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. Nelson Mandela is one of the most courageous human; he has sacrificed his own freedom for the freedom of others. He belongs to the ages. During his stay in prison Nelson Mandela wrote a book,”A taste of freedom”. The passage we studied tells how Nelson managed to survive in prison and the story of his garden. The capital of South Africa is Pretoria. The history of South Africa begins with the introduction of apartheid in 1948 and ends with the consecration of Nelson Mandela in 1994. The apartheid separates populations according to ethnic and linguistic criteria, in chosen geographical zones.

Then, through the evolution of western movies, we tried to see how myths can be revisited, questioned and debunked.
First there is an idealized representation of American expansion with the cowboys shown as brave and fearless heroes defying the dangers and hardships of the wild vast plains and the Indian enemies. "American Progress" is a painting done by John Gast. The focus is on a figure who is flying. She looks like an angel: She looks divine and is wearing a white gown. The female figure is holding, carrying an electric wire that symbolizes the advance of the trains. Behind her, the colours are light white in front of her, the painting is dark: the woman embodies light, American progress and civilization. It glorifies the conquest of the Wild West, and corresponds to the theory and ideology of «the manifest destiny “god wanted America to bring civilization to the "savages». Then we watched in class trailer of "How the West Was Won". It's a Wild West American spans fifty years of the history of the American West from 1839 to 1889. George Armstrong Custer is a general American cavalry. He is famous for his exploits during the Civil War and his defeat at the Battle of Little Big Horn facing Indian tribes. It is one of the main figures of the American Indian wars of the nineteenth century.
And then, the image given by more modern film directors is different and more realistic.
The trailer of «Little Big Man" shows the fierceness of the US Army's attack against a defenseless Indian village. We see American soldiers shoot children innocents women.
The extract from Little Big Man relating the story of the Battle of Little Big Horn, General Custer presented as an impetuous, self-involved ambitious mad man whose behaviour on the battlefield is ludicrous and inappropriate.

Finally, all this proves that even if myths can be revisited and updated, heroes often reflect the major role of a particular person or specific groups in the shaping of a nation, and I think we all need heroes to inspire us. To make us want to do our best to live up to some ideals.
