To choose /able
Message from shakesword posted on 02-08-2013 at 13:56:39 (D | E | F)
Hello

Can you help me please?

Both -able and -ile mean “that may be” or “capable to”;so when am I supposed to use -able and when -ile?
Thank you for your answers.

Hello,

-ile mean “ may be” or “capable to”
Where did you see "ile" means able to?
Thanks to answer.

Hello ,

Actually , both suffixes - ible and -able have the same meaning ( expressing possibility rather than capacity ) , but not the same origins. They turn a verb into an adjective .
- suitable / visible
It seems -able completes a verb coming from old French and - ible from Latin . And there might be more action in - able , than in -ible ( state) .
Yet , it is quite subtle and the best thing to do , I reckon, is to check that up in a dictionary or see lists of adjectives finishing with either -able or -ible .
I hope I am helping you a little, if there is a proper answer .
