Now/other use
Message de micmania posté le 05-05-2013 à 17:09:42 (S | E | F)
Hello everyone !
I have a question about the word "now".
I read a book in English (i'm french) and I met this word in a peculiar (to me) way.
May you check this please :
"-Apparently Jack rated me.
-Did he, now ?"
The man didn't rate her when she said that, so is it rather a way to express astonishment, like "oh really?" ?
Is it usual to see this kind of sentence ?
Thank you !

Hello,
yes, it is usual, it has an ironical overtone and means really.

"-Apparently Jack rated me.
-Did he, now ?" = Did he really ? = You don't say ! = Are you really sure he did ?(with an ironical smile)

Hello,
I'll add to the previous reply.
This is a common phrase in English and is usually spoken with a tone of sarcasm in the speaker's voice. It's as if to say Jack is not qualified to rate you. It can also express surprise as the other poster said here. In either case, Jack is doing something he does not normally do or should not be doing.

Oh, so it has different meanings, according to the context.
Thank you again

Hello,

Actually, "maintenant" can be used in French in the same way.
Ah bon, il t'évalue, maintenant?! (= quel toupet!)
