Laypeople/help
Message from razzor posted on 05-04-2013 at 22:54:26 (D | E | F)
Hello,

I am in need of some help with some vocabulary.
I have to translate a text from French into English, and having come across the term "les laïcs", I wasn't too sure how to go about translating it.
I know that 'un laïc' would be a 'layman', but I was wondering if the term 'laypeople' would be better if you are not referring to any specific gender.
I looked up the word on the Wordreference dictionary, but nothing came up. As an English speaker, I would say it is perfectly correct. However, I wish to have other opinions.
I await your answers
Thank you in advance!

Do you know the term "Politically correct" (PC)?

"Laypeople" or "Layperson" sounds a bit PC to me. "Laymen" would sound better and is acceptable for either gender.

It's similar to "Chairman". The PC attitude is to refer to a "Chairperson" although "Chairman" has been in use for centuries to refer to women too.
