Participle / gerund
Message from dangkhoa posted on 28-03-2013 at 08:42:03 (D | E | F)
Hello,

Could you help me please?

After the verb "spend", we use "(pro)noun + ing-form verb for example:
They spent more than one week travelling around.
I don't know whether travelling is a participle or gerund.
Thank you for your answers.

Hello,

I'd say 'travelling' is a gerund here.

Wow! Tricky question.

Personally, I'd go for a participle (sorry, Lucille) - if not that a gerundive, rather than a gerund.

The reason I think it's a participle is that it would take an adverb as a descriptor. "I was travelling slowly" rather than "I was travelling slow".

(But I'm just an English speaker, not a grammarian or someone who's actually studied English)
