Which, who/aide
Message de vaiana posté le 07-08-2018 à 18:38:08 (S | E | F)
Bonsoir,
j'ai encore une question (décidément)
Cette fois-ci par rapport aux pronoms relatifs... Je ne sais jamais si je peux/dois mettre la préposition à la fin ou non.

Exemples : ces phrases sont elles correctes ? Que faut il dire ?
-- Here is the boat with which we left France to the UK.
-- Here is the boat we left France to the UK with.
-- Here is the boat which we left France to the UK with.
-- Here is the boat that we left France to the UK with.

Ou encore :
-- The girl with whom I spent the last evening was attractive.
-- The girl I spent the last evening with was attractive.
-- The girl whom I spent the last evening with was attractive.
-- The girl that I spent the last evening with was attractive.

-- The box into which I threw the ball.
-- The box I threw the ball into.
-- The box which I threw the ball into.
-- The box that I threw the ball into.

Merci pour vos réponses.

Hello, you made no mistakes as far as proper placement of prepositions is concerned; all four constructions are correct. (But "leave France to the UK" is wrong.)
See you.

Hello. Do all these four constructions have the same meaning? One in particular is not used more than another?

Is this "leave ... for"? Thanks.

Hello!

-- "Here is the boat with which we left France for the UK" is the most formal sentence of the four.
-- "Here is the boat we left France for the UK with" is the most common sentence.
-- "Here is the boat which we left France for the UK with" is less common than the sentence below.
-- "Here is the boat that we left France for the UK with".

Ou encore :
-- "The girl with whom I spent the last evening was attractive" is quite outdated and formal.
-- "The girl I spent the last evening with was attractive". is the most common.
-- "The girl who(m) I spent the last evening with was attractive". is also common, as is the other below.
-- "The girl that I spent the last evening with was attractive".

-- "The box into which I threw the ball". is not very common and can sound awkward
-- "The box I threw the ball into". is the most common.
-- "The box which I threw the ball into". is less common than the sentence below.
-- "The box that I threw the ball into"

Is this "leave ... for"? Thanks.
Yes, it is.

Bonne journée !

Thank you very much for answering!!

J'ai néanmoins une question : pourquoi "who" et pas "whom" ?

Merci !

Hello, "whom" is regarded as formal, whereas ending a clause in a preposition is regarded as informal.
Also, no "the" before "last evening" if you mean the evening before now.
See you.
